Choral scholars

Singers can apply for one of four choral scholarships for the academic year. Choral scholars attend weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings 7.15pm-9.30pm in term time, in addition to around four performances a year.

The scholarships are open to singers aged 18-30, or students in full or part time music education. They are ideal for aspiring professional singers wishing to develop their choral singing and sight-reading and as a means of broadening repertoire knowledge.

Scholarships are worth £1000 per season. There will be occasional solo/quartet/semi chorus opportunities, and also a chance for the scholars to receive coaching from the choir’s superb Musical Director.

It is expected that choral scholars will mentor our younger choral apprentices, take an active role with social media for the ensemble, and generally support the endeavours of Bristol Choral Society.

Interested singers are welcome to join us for a trial rehearsal.

If would like to apply please download further information and an application form. Completed forms should be emailed to chair@bristolchoral.co.uk.

Meet Our Scholars!

Emily Nunns – Soprano Scholar

I currently hold a soprano choral scholarship with BCS. The scholarship allows me to sing a range of music on a weekly basis, assist in rehearsals and sing in at some fantastic venues. I recently sang with the choir on a recording for Radio 3 and have performed solos as part of the Come and Sing events.

The scholarship bridges the gap between amateur to professional solo and choral singing whilst giving me opportunities to learn new music and develop my technique. I read Music at Newcastle University and studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock, Germany. I held a choral scholarship in Newcastle for the duration of my degree and performed as a singer and instrumentalist in the North East. Since moving to Bristol, I’ve sung regularly as a soloist and with other music groups and enjoy a career in both performing and teaching.

Alice Bingham – Soprano Scholar

I am one of the soprano choral scholars with Bristol Choral Society. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to hone my skills in a professional context with a wonderful ensemble and sing such a wide variety of repertoire including the choral classics, as well as under-performed and lesser-known gems.

I grew up as a clarinettist and sung in choirs for fun for a number of years before I started my singing training in 2018 with Ann Clewlow in Weston-super-Mare. In this time, I have quickly progressed through Grade 8 and ATCL with distinction, and I have recently started working towards my Licentiate of Trinity College London diploma. I am enjoying singing with Bristol Choral Society and Costanzi Consort, as well as being on the dep lists for other choirs in Bristol and Devon.
